A North Manchester man is in custody facing preliminary charges of attempted murder and robbery, according to a statement from the North Manchester Police Department, following an incident that took place around 12:45 a.m. on Monday in North Manchester.

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle theft that took place at a gas station on Wabash Road in North Manchester, NMPD said. During their search for the vehicle, NMPD was informed that Samuel Lopez, 28, North Manchester, was believed to have stolen the vehicle and that there was a female inside the vehicle with Lopez.

The female had been stabbed in the chest, NMPD said, but was eventually able to exit the vehicle. She was reportedly taken to a hospital in Fort Wayne. NMPD has not released the name of the female victim as of Monday afternoon.

NMPD said Lopez had driven the stolen car to Strauss Feeds where he reportedly left the vehicle and asked for a ride from a nearby truck driver, who also remained unnamed. The driver then took Lopez to the Manchester Trading Post where, according to NMPD, Lopez then “battered” the driver and attempted to take control of another vehicle.

At this point, NMPD reports, Sgt. Nathaniel Birch was able to apprehend Lopez and take him into custody.

Lopez has been preliminarily charged by NMPD with attempted murder, criminal confinement, robbery, battery on a pregnant woman, battery with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, battery and operating a vehicle while never licensed. He is currently being held in the Wabash County Jail.
