After 37 years of employment with Wabash County, John Martin, highway superintendent, will leave the office for the last time on Friday.

That’s because Martin has decided to retire.

Martin was honored with a plaque during Monday’s Wabash County Commissioner meeting for his years of service.

In an interview after the meeting, Martin said he felt now was the correct time to say goodbye.

“We just decided it was time,” he said. “We’re looking to do other things.”

Martin said even though he had held his current title for the past nine years, he certainly didn’t begin his career with the county that way.

“I started as a part-time mower man,” he said.

Martin said of all the things he’ll miss about the job, “the people” came first.

“I have good commissioners to work with. I’ll miss that,” he said.
