Staff Report

Jace Randel, of Wabash, will be honored Tuesday as a part of the 2020 class of Riley Champions at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the MSD school board meeting, at 204 N. 300 West, according to a press release.

Riley Champions Presented by Kroger is a program that honors patients from Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health who have inspired communities with their bravery and commitment to helping others while navigating medical challenges. These children serve as advocates and ambassadors for Riley by sharing their stories and participating in special events throughout the year.

Randel was 11 years old when a bone marrow biopsy at Riley Hospital for Children revealed he had severe aplastic anemia, leaving his bone marrow unable to make enough blood cells for his body.

“The only treatment was a bone marrow transplant, and thankfully Jace’s older sister, Audrie, was a match,” stated the release. “Jace stayed at Riley for 53 days. When a family friend raised money for his care, Jace requested that the funds be given instead to Riley Children’s Foundation to support Child Life, Stem Cell Social Work and the research of his primary physician, Riley Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist Grzegorz Nalepa, who passed away suddenly last fall. Jace is now a 16-year-old high school sophomore who loves baseball, takes honors classes and raises chickens for 4-H.”

Other 2020 Riley Champions include:

n Katherine Alderfer, of Winona Lake.

n Kylee Appman, of Gentryville.

n Britton Helmuth, of Harlan.

n Luke Jackson, of Bloomington.

n Ke’Mora McMiller, of Indianapolis.

n Sir Jonathan Thompson, of Indianapolis.

n Addyson Wooldridge, of Lafayette.
