Kruschwitz falls short at regional meet

CHIP: Manchester’s Harley Kruschwitz chips a ball onto the green during apast sectional meet at Rozella Ford Golf Course.

Staff reports

Manchester junior Harley Kruschwitz saw his bid for a third-straight bid to the state finals come to an end on Thursdays. At the Plymouth Regional held at Swan Lake Golf Course, Kruschwitz’s slow start proved costly as his round of 79 wasn’t enough to move onto next week’s state final.

Individually, Dwenger’s Johnny Filler won a playoff to earn medalist honors over Homestead’s Adam DeLong after both finished with rounds of 72. DeKalb’s Bailey Clark and Peru’s Kash Bellar had rounds of 73 and Branden Hansen of Kokomo had a round of 74.

DeLong, Clark, Bellar, Hansen and Alex Hedrick of Columbia City, who fired a 75, earned the individual qualifier spots for the state meet.

Bishop Dwenger captured the team regional title with a score of 305. Penn was second with a 307 and Warsaw edged out the third spot with a round of 318. Canterbury and Peru had matching rounds of 319 with the Cavaliers taking fourth via the fifth score.

Kruschwitz teed off on the front nine and got off to a slow start as he went bogey, double bogey, bogey to quickly move to four over par through three holes. Across the final six holes, Kruschwitz traded two bogeys with a birdie to finish with a score of 41 across the front nine.

On the back nine, Kruschwitz started much more evenly with three straight pars. Birdies on holes No. 13 and 15 were offset by bogeys on No. 16 and 18 for an even-par 38 across the final nine holes.

The score of 79 would not hold up, though, as Kruschwitz would bow out before the state finals for the first time in his high school career.

Peru’s Bellar will compete in the state meet at Prairie View Golf Club on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
