Scammers target Wabash County

BY Kaitlin Gebby - kgebby@wabashplaindealer.com

The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department is warning people of a recently reported scam in the area.

According to the press release, scammers are calling residents falsely claiming to be with the sheriff’s department and requesting personal information. The release stated that the sheriff’s office “will never call individuals asking for personal information.”

The sheriff’s department said they received several calls Wednesday and Thursday reporting the scam. Callers reported someone claiming to be from the “warrants and citations department,” who would then ask them to go to Kroger or another store to purchase a gift card.

The sheriff’s department said they don’t believe the scam is coming from a local person “based on the way they are pronouncing Wabash.”

The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department is asking residents to refrain from giving any information away and to report this scam by calling central dispatch at (260) 563-9223.
