Apaches drop first TRC game of season

Staff reports

Wabash’s boys’ basketball team suffered its first slip-up in Three Rivers Conference (TRC) play on Tuesday evening. After leading for the large part of the contest on the road against Tippecanoe Valley, the Apaches watched the hosts use a 23-7 fourth quarter to earn an upset win, 54-46.

Wabash trailed after one quarter but had leveled the score by halftime at 25-25. A big third period saw the guests take a 39-31 lead into the final period. The Vikings, who entered the contest with a 9-8 mark, won the final quarter in convincing fashion to secure the victory.

Elijah Vander Velden was the lone Apache in double figures as the big man poured in 20 points to lead the way. Jasper Walters added six and Blake Gribben and Trenton Daughtry finished with five points apiece. As a team, Wabash hit just 18 of their 59 attempted field goals with eight of those coming from Vander Velden.

Vander Velden had eight rebounds in the loss while Walters poured down four. Logan Vander Velden and Dereck Vogel had three assists apiece and Blake Gribben had a team-high three steals.

The loss is the third straight defeat for Wabash as they fall to 12-4 on the season. In TRC play, Wabash now sits at 6-1 on the year. Manchester also has just one conference loss this season and hold a 4-1 mark. Tippecanoe Valley (6-2) and Peru (4-2) are the only two-loss teams in TRC play.

Wabash holds a win over Manchester on the season. The Apaches have games against Rochester and Peru as their final two TRC games this season.

Wabash will host Rochester on Friday in their penultimate TRC game of the season. Wabash’s final TRC game won’t come until Feb. 22 at home against Peru.
