Apaches send four wrestlers to semi-state

The Wabash wrestling team will send four wrestlers to next week’s semi-state, including regional champion Jared Brooks after taking sixth as a team at the Peru regional on Saturday.

Brooks captured the 106-pound title with an 11-0 majority decision victory in the final. Ethan Higgins placed third at 120 pounds, Justin Samons placed third at 220 pounds and Grant Warmuth placed fourth at 285 pounds.

As a team, the Apaches finished with 55 points, 10 points behind Maconaquah and Rochester in fourth. Oak Hill won the team title with 123.5 points while Western placed second with 118 points. Eastern took third with 105.5 points.

Manchester took eighth as a team with 43.5 points while Northfield finished with 12 points to take 14th.

Higgins fell to Chandler Ciscell of Western by decision, 10-8, in the semi-final before bouncing back for a pinfall win in the third-place match over Bradie Porter of Eastern). Samons was pinned by Fred Durben of Oak Hill in the third round before earning a first-period pin over Andrew Cruz. Warmuth finished fourth on the day after falling to AJ Jones in the semi-finals by first-period pin and Kamphues in the third-place match by decision, 4-2.

Manchester’s Dylan Stroud and Delton Moore took second on the day at 126 pounds and 170 pounds, respective. Stroud fell by decision to Western’s Hayden Shepherd in the final while Moore lost to Rochester’s Zane Gilbreath by an 8-3 decision in a rematch of the sectional final.

Bryce Kamphues placed third on the day to also earn a spot at semi-state, falling to eventual regional champion Adam Bowman of Maconaquah in the semi-finals.

Northfield’s Jasper Donaldson took third on the day to advance to the semi-state, overcoming a semi-final loss to Victor Lee of Marion by pinning Zion Ryan of Peru by pinfall in the second round.

Semi-state qualifiers will travel to Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Saturday with the semi-state scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. Admission is $8 for the final session only and $10 for the entire day.
