Second-half rally does in Northfield

Northfield’s boys’ basketball team saw its halftime lead at Tippecanoe Valley on Friday quickly disappear in a 76-57 loss to the Vikings.

The Norse built an 18-11 lead after one, then carried that margin to halftime as they lead 36-29. However, the lead evaporated quickly as the host Vikings outscored Northfield 23-9 in the third period and 24-12 in the fourth, winning the second half by a total of 47-21.

Clayton Tomlinson led Northfield in scoring with 18 points. Jared Peas had 12 and Nate Drancik added eight in the loss.

The Norse (1-8) hosted Madison-Grant on Saturday but results were unavailable as of Plain Dealer deadline. Northfield will travel to North Miami on Tuesday.

Valpo rolls past Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Ryan Fazekas scored 18 points and Valparaiso used a big first half to roll past Missouri State, 82-66 and pick up a Missouri Valley Conference victory on the road Saturday.

Valpo needed a running, 50-foot buzzer beater to get past Illinois State in its conference opener, but wasted no time taking charge against the Bears, rolling to a 46-24 halftime score.

NFL hands out fine from last week

NEW YORK (AP) — San Francisco 49ers safety Antone Exum Jr. has been fined $53,482 by the NFL for his hit on Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Robert Woods last Sunday. Exum was penalized for unnecessary roughness on the play in which he hit Woods in his midsection.

Miami’s Kiko Alonso and Robert Quinn were docked $10,026 for unnecessary roughness, and Buffalo’s Jordan Mills was fined $13,369 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
