13/15 lane restrictions to start

Lane restrictions on the Ind. 13 – Ind. 15 corridor are scheduled to take effect today as contractors formally start working on the Stellar-affiliated corridor improvement project, which will see the construction of new storm sewers, curbs and sidewalks along the entrance to downtown Wabash, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said.

Preliminary work has been underway for months in preparation for the INDOT portion of the project.

INDOT says northbound traffic along this route will be shifted to the center lane between LaFontaine Avenue and Canal Street until mid-November. Southbound lane restrictions are expected after November when work shifts to the west side of the corridor.

INDOT awarded the project contract to Phend & Brown for $2.9 million.

Project outlines suggest the corridor “improvements will be similar to the rest of downtown Wabash,” according to the Stellar quarterly report from February.

Perhaps the most visible change outlined in the quarterly report is the planned installation of a new overhead gateway feature at the south side of the bridge near “The Cut,” signifying the entrance to the downtown district.

Other changes are said to improve traffic flow, increase pedestrian safety and modernize the corridor so that it matches the downtown area.

The project is several months behind schedule. INDOT previously expected to start construction in April, but that was halted to allow utility companies to complete preliminary work.
