Kruschwitz qualifies for state golf meet

Staff reports

For the second-consecutive season, Manchester’s Harley Kruschwitz will be competing in the state meet.

Kruschwitz carded a round of 72 to earn his spot at state at the Stonehenge Golf Course regional on Thursday, taking one of the five individual spots on non-advancing teams.

Penn’s Ben Szlarek and Homestead’s Garrett Willis had matching rounds of 70 with Szlarek winning the playoff to take medalist honors on the day. Kruschwitz finished third individually while South Bend St. Joseph’s Michael Anthony, Culver Academies’ Michael Perea and Bishop Dwenger’s Logan Ryan tied with rounds of 73.

In the team standings, Penn took home the title with a round of 297. Culver Academies finished second with a 304 and Bishop Dwenger took third with a 305 with all three schools advancing to the state meet.

Homestead and Fort Wayne Canterbury were narrow fourth-place finishers with rounds of 306.

Kruschwitz fired identical rounds of 36 on the front and back nine, but it did not come without some pitfalls along the way.

The sophomore opened on the back nine with a par on hole No. 10 before triple-bogeying No. 11. Kruschwitz would bounce back with an eagle on hole No. 16 before splitting a bogey and birdie on the final two holes for a one-over 36 on the back nine.

The front nine for Kruschwitz was far less adventurous with a bogey on hole No. 4 offset by a birdie on hole No. 6 for an even-par 36 and a one-over 72 on the day.

Kruschwitz will take part in the two-day state finals beginning on Tuesday. The state finals take place at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.

Last year, Kruschwitz tied for 69th at the state meet, firing an 80 in round one and an 81 in round two for a two-day score of 17-over 161.

On Tuesday, Kruschwitz will tee off in the first group at 8 a.m. from the 10th tee. Admission for the tournament is $12 and is good for both days of the tournament. Tickets may be purchased online or at the front gate of the golf course.
