Two injured in PaperWorks fire

by MACKENZI KLEMANN - mklemann@wabashplaindealer.com

A Thursday morning fire at the PaperWorks mill in Wabash is under investigation by the Wabash Fire Department.

Two people were reportedly injured and treated at the scene of the fire, with one individual refusing transport and the other being transported for additional medical assistance, the Wabash Fire Department confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The Wabash Fire Department first received a call regarding a fire in the factory's boiler room at approximately 10:16 a.m., the department said.

The first unit to arrive was directed toward a column of heavy, black smoke emanating from the center of the building, the department said. Firefighters were advised at this time that employees had already been evacuated but that there was an injured person upstairs in the tower area. The department then learned of a second injured individual.

The condition of the injured individuals was unknown as of deadline on Thursday. Their identities have not been made public at this time.

The entire Wabash Fire Department was called to the scene to assist with the fire and EMS duties, with the fire declared under control about 30 minutes later at 10:40 a.m., the department said. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Wabash Fire Department as of Thursday afernoon. City Police were called to the scene but are not participating in the investigation at this time.

Fire Chief Barry Stroup explained that the fire was located in what he described as the mill's tower area, or the roof and top floor, rather than the boiler room as the original call suggested. He said the extent of damage has not been confirmed.
