The Wabash City Schools board approved Monday night three percent raises for teachers this 2008-09 school year. The Wabash City Teachers Association had ratified the agreement earlier.
The base wage this year for a beginning teacher with a bachelor's degree will be $29,970.
Also granted three percent raises were some quasi-administrators - the school nurses, technology director, sub coordinator and elementary at-risk counselor.
The board also granted raises to administrators below the superintendent, who is always dealt with separately.
Raises for administrators ranged from 3 percent and slightly more. The criteria there was what similarly placed administrators are getting elsewhere in the county and in similarly sized districts in Indiana.
The top Wabash City Schools salary (short of superintendent) goes to Jason Callahan, principal of the high and middle school - $84,000.
The board also heard Superintendent Celia Briggs suggest the district think about starting an internship program that's had success elsewhere in the country.
Students would be placed, if possible, into partly paid work experiences where they could learn about the work ethic and what employers are looking for in full-time employment.
The board also:
- Learned that the district cleared some money recently by selling retiring school buses at state auction. After auction costs, the district cleared $1,850 - substantially more than trade-ins had been drawing.
- Approved Susan Dawes returning to her aide position at Wabash Middle School.
- Accepted a donation of $10,000 for a Smart Board at W.C. MiIls Elementary from the Leah Sundheimer Foundation.
- Appointed board member Michele Hough as liaison to the Wabash Redevelopment Commission.
- Accepted the recommendation to waive the facility rental fee for the Lincoln Presentation sponsored by the Tri-Kappa Society at Wabash Middle School auditorium on March 12.
- Accepted the resignation of Randy LePage as driver's education coordinator.
- Approved Ryan "Brady" McClure to teach Principals of Engineering for the Project Lead the Way program .
- Approved John Davis as a substitute nurse for Wabash City Schools.
