Noblesville Daily Times to cease publication

NOBLESVILLE - The Noblesville Daily Times announced Wednesday that it would shut down this week, a little more than five years after the newspaper began publication.

The newspaper said its final edition will be published Saturday.

Publisher Michael Corbett said the decision was made Tuesday to close the paper in the northern suburb of Indianapolis.

‘‘It's a tough economy, it's a competitive market, and it's a tough time for newspapers in general,'' he said. ‘‘All newspapers are wrestling with what the future's going to be. And the industry is just in upheaval right now.''

The Daily Times, with a circulation of about 6,500 paid subscribers, began publication in June 2003 after South Bend-based Schurz Communications Inc. bought The Noblesville Times, a weekly newspaper, and converted it to a six-days-a-week newspaper.

Publication was scaled back to five days a week in February.

Corbett said Schurz Communications put the Daily Times up for sale six months ago but did not find a buyer.

‘‘We've tried for five years to make that paper successful in Noblesville and we did not succeed,'' said Charles Pittman, the senior vice president of publishing for Schurz.

Schurz saw Noblesville and surrounding Hamilton County, the state's wealthiest and fastest-growing county, as a strong potential market for a new daily paper. But the Daily Times struggled to compete against The Indianapolis Star, the Gannett Co.-owned paper that dominates the metro Indianapolis market.

The Daily Times said it has 24 full-time employees.
