4-H auction is a good show

By JANA SLACIAN and JOSEPH SLACIAN
Friday, July 18, 2008 10:54 PM EDT

Two animals - the Grand Champion Steer and the Grand Champion Swine - brought in $18,400 together.

Throw in another $3,000 for a park bench, and the annual Wabash County 4-H Auction on Friday night had the makings of a good show.

The auction began at 5 p.m. and continued past 10 p.m. before the last swine crossed the auction stand.

Auctioneers from around Wabash County took turns as the 4-Hers, one-by-one, paraded their animals through the show arena. Bidders, seated directly in front of the show ring, had the auctioneers screaming throughout the night as they busily raised the bids for the youths' animals.

The largest amount raised was $9,400 for Levi Allen's Grand Champion Steer. A group of buyers (they are listed later in the story) combined their efforts to purchase the animal.

Tyler Shepherd's Grand Champion Swine raised $9,000, again purchased by a large group of buyer. Shepherd planned to donate 10 percent of the money raised to the 4-H Building Fund.

Throughout the night, 4-Hers shed tears as they worked with their animals for the last time this year.

After the sale, many sought out their buyers and shook hands to thank them. Some even gave their buyers thank-you cards.

The total amount raised during the sale was not available at press time.
